Love the skin (and hair) you’re in6/19/2019 We always want what we don’t have. If you are short you want to be taller and vice versa. The same holds true with our hair. If you have fine straight hair, you long for thick, full-bodied hair. But what if we could just embrace the hair we have and be happy? We would just be a little bit less stressed if this were to happen. When you visit your local hair salon you are most likely asking for a color different than your own or a treatment or cut that turns your hair into something totally different.
By embracing the natural texture of your hair, you are letting go of wanting what you don’t have and in the meantime taking a lot of pressure and stress off yourself. It doesn’t mean that you can’t straighten those curly locks once in a while or put tons of waves into that pin straight hair, it just means you can be happy with what you have right now. If you have thin hair, there are many ways to emphasize the color or the cut and stop focusing on the fact that it is thin. Try playing with different makeup applications and get a cut that frames your face. Your hair will still look beautiful but the emphasis will be more focused on those beautiful eyes. You will soon learn that thin hair can be a bonus. You can throw it up in a bun and fluff it out a bit to make it look fuller. Be happy with your thin hair because somewhere out there is a girl with curly, out of control hair that is wishing she was just like you. For those born with curly, crazy hair, we feel your pain. But that wild child look is just one thing about you that others love. You may look in the mirror and see nothing but hair. Big, fat, fluffy hair. We say embrace it! Let that freak hair flag fly! Use the right products for your hair texture to help keep the frizz at bay but make sure you use the right products that also emphasize the curls and give them more definition. Who wants straight hair when you have big, bold and beautiful bouncy locks? Is your hair somewhere in between? Consider yourself the luckiest girl in the world then! When you have hair that is straight but with a wave to it, not too thin but not real thick either, you have the hair that is easy to control and fun to maintain. You can wear it up or down, straighter or curlier, the choice is yours. Whatever texture your hair is, the in thing to do these days is to just embrace it! In a world where we are trying to be more natural and organic, loving your hair is one step in the right direction. Take the stress out of worrying about the hair you don’t have and love the hair you do. Visit Legends Salon of Hillsborough and put your best foot (hair) forward! It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… That pretty much sums up what it feels like to be blessed with both straight and curly hair. Interestingly, largely due to genetics, many women experience the board-like strands on top of their head and the twisted ones below. Environmental and styling issues intensify this difference. Speak with the experts at Legends Salon of Hillsborough to guide you to the perfect solution for you.
The hair on top of your head has more exposure to the sun and heating tools and is being pulled and touched more than the hair at the bottom. This breaks down the cortex of the hair, which, like the core of your body, gives structure and shape. As a result, those top pieces unfurl and lose curl. Unruly hormones (a result of pregnancy or stress) are also a key culprit in textural changes. Estrogen and testosterone levels affect the diameter, texture, and strength of any given strand. Those who have lost hair to chemotherapy notice that their hair grows back very different than it was before. To make peace with your unusual hair, you have to have the right haircut. The right cut can be a great peacemaker. Ask your hairstylist for face-framing, graduated layers (we know what you’re thinking and no, we’re not talking about the Rachel; we’re talking subtle). By removing weight, strands around the front and top of your head will spring to life. It gives them the much-needed bend they are lacking to better resemble your curls underneath. To align the textures, consider getting a partial straightening or wave treatment at the salon, which lasts for about three months; or at home, style only the outer layer. Want to make your curly-straight combo straighter? Apply a smoothing cream on curls and flatiron them, working in small, one-inch sections of hair so you don’t miss any layers. Want your curly-straight combo curlier? Curl only the straight section. Waves, not quite coils, not quite rails, help aggressive textures meet in the middle. From roots to tips of damp hair, work through a golf ball-size amount of a soft-hold mousse. Then, starting by the face, grab one-inch-wide sections of hair and twist them so they mimic the curls on the bottom. Use a diffuser on the top, which enhances curls, and let the curly bottom air-dry to relax that section. These are some ways in which you can try and get your straight and curly hair to meet in the middle. It’s a tough situation to be in if you have hair that behaves this way but it doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. Control your out of control hair and show it who’s boss. As the global haircare market is estimated to be worth some $74 billion in 2018, we can expect to see a real shake-up and plenty of innovation within the industry. Hair care brands are adapting their offerings to suit the needs of the consumer, from tech-driven products and services through to more tailored solutions for individual hair types.
From the beauty team at Legends Salon of Hillsborough, here are three emerging trends to watch out for in this new year. Hair goes techy Hair brands will be using more advanced digital technology, both online and in salons, to provide consumers with better-personalized products and playful services. From technology that assists consumers in finding the right product and service to digital beauty bloggers to a new app that allows users to test out an array of hair colors on a selfie, the tech age is here and it isn’t going anywhere. Skincare for hair Korean beauty trends continue to influence the cosmetics industry globally, with the multi-step regime now set to enter the hair care category. Given the amount of time we spend on skincare, our hair and scalp are neglected by comparison. The range includes a hair moisturizer infused with nourishing prickly pear to care for the hair and scalp, designed to use on a daily basis, in the same way as a facial moisturizer. Treating hair loss Hair care products that treat hair loss are set to see improved formulations emerging in the coming years, thanks to new ingredients and technology. Gadgets that target thinning hair will gain traction, as consumers look for non-surgical procedures and at-home products to promote growth. From techy hair to fighting hair loss, there is definitely a twist to how we are handling hair care these days. As trends emerge, so is the need for new and improved ways we take care of our hair and solve our hair problems. If you are one of many who is always seeking better hair care products or searching for that perfect color, there are ways to achieve beautiful hair as these trends emerge. Visiting your local hair salon can help you gain an understanding of what your hair needs and what you can do to solve its problems. As new trends are always emerging and improving the hair care industry, there will always be ways for you to get the perfect hair you are striving for. At Legends Salon of Hillsborough, we follow trends and keep our customers informed of any worthwhile new creations that will help your hair and help make life easier for you. When you are looking for the perfect cut and/or color, let us show you how we can create the perfect hair for you. Visit Legends Salon of Hillsborough today and speak with one of our expert hair stylists. Good hair doesn’t have to be hard to find, you just need the right teachers. If you are like me with very, very curly hair, you understand some frustrations we have to endure. I have a mountainous tumble of ringlets. It is a lot of work. It’s very high maintenance. They are impossible to detangle, I have to spritz them with a moisturizing reviving spray every morning, and they get crushed and matted after a full night’s sleep. Suffice it to say, I LOVE getting blowouts here and there. Wearing it straight is just so much easier. I can get it straightened on a Saturday and then don’t touch it again for up to a week!
Of course, blowouts can start to crumble, your roots get oily and your second or third-day hair can start to pick up certain environmental scents and can start to look dull. Luckily we have hacks for each of these issues. Check out these three ideas to help keep your blowout for as long as possible. Dry shampoo Dry shampoo is a lifesaver, not only because it controls oil and buildup between shampoos, but also it gives hair body at the root (simply apply, flip hair over, and massage into your scalp). Ask your hair stylist for some tips on finding the best dry shampoo for your hair. (I don’t recommend using dry shampoo when you are in curly mode with your hair because it can dry your hair out. Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair.) Hair fragrance It’s a sad fact that hair can carry the scent of whatever it is exposed to. Going for Mexican and having fajitas? Better do that on the day before your next blowout. Nothing freshens an aging blowout like a lightweight hair scent. There are mists out there that are lightweight and faintly-scented. They also manage to fight frizz and strand static. Again, check with your hair stylist to see what they recommend. Most are good, however, and it is just a matter of finding a scent you like. Satin pillowcase After the second day, your blowout can look a bit shine-free. When hairs rub up against the rough cotton fibers in your pillowcase, it can result in an ever duller-looking finish. Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. The shiny surface helps hair retain its natural oils and looks glossier than ever. Follow these three simple ideas and your blowout will last you a while. When you are fighting the curly hair battle every day, sometimes it’s nice to go straight and not have to focus so much on your hair. Don’t get me wrong, I love the curls and I think they define who I am, but sometimes I just need a break! For amazing blowouts, head to Legends Salon of Hillsborough and have one of our experts give your hair the royal, blowout treatment! You will not be disappointed. Breaking up is hard to do1/28/2019 No one likes to break up. The tears, the heartache, the agony of it all. So when we find a hair stylist we like, we want to keep them forever. However, sometimes, you may have to break up with your hair stylist. It’s not something you want to do but, for the sake of your hair, it is sometimes necessary. How do you know when it’s time to break up with your hairstylist and find someone new? These telltale signs will help you to figure it out. If the signs are there, it’s time to move on.
She doesn’t listen to you If you want a particular style and you walk out of the salon with something completely different, this is a huge red flag. If your hairstylist doesn’t think the style you want will look good on you or is even feasible, she should be honest enough to tell you so. But to give you a style completely different just because she thinks she knows what’s best for your hair is a big giant no-no. She has no idea how to cut your hair I have half straight hair (on top) and half curly (on the bottom) hair. Due to chemotherapy, my hair came back with a whole new life of its own. My hairstylist had no idea how to cut it. None whatsoever. Instead of telling me she had no clue, I kept leaving the salon with a cut that was totally wrong for my hair type. I found a new girl who actually asked her boss (the salon owner) for advice. She admitted she wasn’t sure but instead of winging it, she went to someone with more experience than her. I admired her for that and now she “gets me.” You never leave the salon feeling refreshed When you experience a hair salon, you should walk out feeling good, confident, and totally relaxed. If you leave as stressed or more stressed than when you walked in, you need to walk out and keep walking. No salon should ever make you feel like you just took a trip to the dentist. They want you to feel comfortable and relaxed when you are there. A salon is an experience and you should always leave feeling refreshed. She constantly tries to pawn products on you A good hairstylist knows that most people aren’t going to spend $100 or more on hair products. Just because she is using those products on you in the salon, she is fully aware that they are pricey. If you show an interest in what she is using then she should explain what it is and what the price is and leave the decision to you. Just keep in mind also that you aren’t going to get the same results at home if you aren’t using the products that they use in the salon. Peruse our professional, salon products at the Salon Shoppe at Legends and discuss which products can serve you best at home, keeping you looking your best. When you are ready to break up with your hairstylist, the experts at Legends Salon of Hillsborough are waiting for you. Hair trends come and go but there’s a set of cuts that have proven to stand the test of time and therefore, will always be in style. While your favorite celebrities aren’t afraid to take chances and go for dramatic changes, many stars have one haircut they always return to. Do you have a signature style that you return to all the time? Does your hair stylist know they can count on you to stay with the same style? Even if you like traditional cuts, it’s always good to switch it up from time to time as well.
You don’t have to go with a current trend but maybe one of these time-tested cuts will make you take a second glance. Pixie The textured, side-swept pixie is a timeless classic. Think roaring 20’s short do. A layered pixie cut is an adorable yet sexy look. Most women think they could never wear a pixie but the truth is, this is a cut that does look good on most women. Blunt bangs Bangs are always in style. Yet, not every woman can wear them. Bangs frame the face so make sure you are ready to have all eyes on you when you are sporting bangs. Blunt bangs are bangs that are cut straight across with no framing of the face. They are a showstopper for sure and super bold for some. Wave and volume Think big, cascading volumized waves. It is a bombshell style with a soft touch. Long bouncy locks with face-framing layers are also a version of the classic wavy style. Keeping it long with wave and volume never goes out of style. Ultra sleek An ultra-smooth style parted down the middle is super sleek. Using a flat iron to get hair perfectly straight is the key to this style. It is a classic and timeless cut. The bob This is another cut that has been in style forever. Ever since the turn of the century when women were getting bold with their fashion, the bob has been around to make a statement. It’s another result of the roaring 20s and beyond. It has been altered over the years but the idea is always the same. Curls, curls, curls There is nothing quite like a head full of curly hair. It’s why so many women were getting perms in the 1970s and 1980s. Everyone wants curly hair and this style never goes out of style! If you are blessed with natural curls keep them tight and free from frizz. It will keep your hair tamed and shiny. Some cuts and styles will never go out of style and those depicted above are some of them. If you are looking to make a change to your hairstyle, talk to your hair stylist about keeping it traditional with one of these cuts but altering it just so that it is current and on trend to today’s looks. At Legends Salon of Hillsborough, we want to give you the best cut possible for your face. Let us consult you today! Everything you need to know about hair11/17/2018 Having beautiful, healthy hair isn’t just for models and celebrities. You can have strong, nourished hair too. All it takes to see a big difference is a few simple tricks and some tender loving care. Take the time to learn what your hair wants from you. Knowing your hair type (straight, wavy, curly) and creating a routine specific for your unique texture, color and style can make a world of difference. Changing one simple task in your daily hair routine could significantly impact the health of your hair.
Perhaps you need to switch to a different shampoo or invest in a decent moisturizing scalp treatment. Whether you are searching for a new routine, looking to maintain the vibrancy of newly colored hair or you want to upgrade your moisture intake, there are plenty of ways to do it to keep your hair healthy and strong. Curly hair Know your curl type. Defining your hair patterns is step one in learning how to maintain and care for your curls. Curl type is determined by the shape of the hair follicle. Curl patterns are also identified by the shape the hair strands make (kinky, curvy, spiraled). A person can have multiple pattern types on their head as well. Identifying curly hair type is best done when hair is wet. Hair identification is as follows: 1- It is straight, 2-it is wavy, 3-it is curly and 4-it coils. Next, the subclassification of curly hair falls between A to C based on the width of your pattern. A has a wider pattern, B is medium and C has the smallest patterns. Once you know your curly hair type, taking care of it will be much easier and more manageable. Thin hair It might seem ridiculous to cut thinning hair but trimming thin hair about two inches can make it look thicker and healthier. Making thin hair look thicker can also be as simple as seeing a colorist. Add highlights to make thin hair appear thicker. Color changing swells the hair cuticle, which gives you the appearance of having more hair. Color-treated hair A simple single color change can easily be done at home as long as you pick a color that’s no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural color. The problem is, when you dye your hair at home, you can have patches of color and then your hair appears uneven in color. For the best look in color, trust a professional. Frizzy hair Keeping your hair cuticles sealed is the first step to fighting frizz. Preventing moisture from seeping in is important. Rub a dime-sized drop of anti-frizz cream between your hands and rake it through wet hair. If you have fine hair, look for a lightweight, water based product. If you have thicker hair, use an anti-frizz cream that contains silicone to lock out humidity. Also, air-dry your hair versus using a blow dryer every day to protect your cuticles and prevent unwanted damage and frizz. The less you touch your hair when its wet, the less frizz you will have. For great hair care, visit Legends Salon of Hillsborough today. Best Haircuts in Hillsborough10/4/2018 People who have straight hair want the look of bouncy curls and those with wavy locks dream of the look of pin straight hair. We always want what we don’t have! Fear not, however, there are many options available these days to give you what your heart (and hair) desires. Visit your hair stylist and tell them what you are looking to do. Chances are they have many options available to you. Some temporary, others more permanent. Consult with the hair experts at Legends Salon in Hillsborough NJ.
When you want straight hair For those of us with super tight, sometimes insane, curly hair, we dream of flowing straight hair like movie stars seem to carry effortlessly. You can visit your hair salon and get a blow out when you want to go straight for a special occasion. Your hair stylist will shampoo your curly tresses, add product and use a hair dryer and round brush to straighten your hair. They will follow up with a flat iron for a super straight look as well as products that will lock in the straightening effect. This look can last you until your next washing. For a more permanent look, keratin treatments are very popular. This is a formaldehyde-free, next-generation smoothing system that uses the latest advances in science, along with the finest ingredients to create a product that delivers the best results possible without harmful chemicals. Hair straighteners have come a long way over the years and these treatments are safe for all hair types. This treatment can last for months and is more viable and safe permanent solution. When you want curly hair Curly hair was at its height in the 80s when every girl with straight hair was dying to go to the hair salon and get a perm. Nowadays, those lucky enough to have and love their curly hair can do so with the ease of great hair products to keep the curls tight and bouncy. If you weren’t blessed with naturally curly hair (or you don’t want it, see above) many are going back to the process of perming their hair. But don’t be fooled, perming has come a long, long way from the perming solutions of decades past. A permanent wave, commonly called a perm or permanent, involves the use of chemicals to break and reform the bonds of the hair. The hair is washed and wrapped with a perm rod and waving lotion is applied with a base. This solution creates a chemical reaction that softens the inner structure of the hair by breaking some of the cross-links within and between the protein chains of the hair. The hair swells, stretches and softens, then molds around the shape of the perm rod. Depending on your hair type, perms can last for months. It is true that we always want what we don’t have and our hair is no exception. If you love the look of straight or curly hair when your hair isn’t, visit your hairstylist and talk to them about your desires. At Legends Salon of Hillsborough, we use the best products for your hair that keep it healthy and safe. See what we can do for your hair at Legends! |
